Family Portrait in the City

The Perfect City Family Portrait

“This year, let’s do something different for family pictures.”  Yes!  I told my dear friend.  We planned an epic city family portrait in the heart of Salt Lake City.  The weather was beginning to cool down and the leaves were changing, but the attractive city lights and architecture were calling.  After walking the streets of State and Main, I scouted a spot that would capture not only the prestige of the city but also the whimsy of a family.  A family that works hard, plays hard, and loves deeply.  The perfect city family portrait was born one late afternoon among toddlers, soldiers, first time mothers, and veteran parents.  People who wanted to capture a moment in time.

The weather was cool and calm.  Walking into City Creek Center gave us a feeling of a cosmopolitan life and urban flair.  My clients, the Rupp family, were dressed to the nines ready to capture the art of city steps, scapes, and sky.  Nathan and Alia’s  young family of three started off our family photo shoot,  With tosses into the air and kisses on cheeks, happy moments were gathered.  They were followed by Devin and Staci’s darling family of four with big teddy bear smiles and little lady laughs.  I loved getting up close to their darling children’s expressions.  Lastly, Joshua and Amy gathered their two little handsome gents and strolled down the promenade.  Altogether laughing, swinging, and soaking in the magic of the evening.  These sweet families were such a treat to work with.

Show Time

When everyone in the family arrived, it was show time for this perfect city family portrait.  They had coordinated their colors stylishly and were ready to have a good time.  With five little ones to tickle and entertain, we were all ready for quick snaps shots and cracker breaks.  A few stuffed animals did make an entrance to help coax a smile or two, thank goodness.  Who knew I could balance a stuffed dinosaur on my head while taking a family picture in the middle of the city.  It was loads of fun!

However, the finest part of the photo shoot  was photographing Joe and Jenn together.  Like a newlywed couple just stepping out of the chapel, Joe swept Jenn off her feet and held her in his arms.  My camera shutter kept clicking away, capturing the sweetest parts of life and love.  This couple is one of the most hospitable, charitable,  and generous  pairs of saints I know.  They give to their family, friends, and community without hesitation.  I was happy to be the local Utah photographer to freeze a precious moment in time to honor their legacy.
